Songwriting
should be charged with emotion, real and from the heart. But it
should also be firmly planted in technique and discipline. Walking
this line and developing the craft of songwriting are central to
our approach at Ivory Tower.
We take an interactive approach with the writer, giving song critiques
on current material, teaching song writing principles as the artist
is ready for them, challenging the writer through time as the progress.
This module is often conducted in conjunction with the production of
an album.
Some of the techniques and concepts addressed in this module are:
- Understanding
and balancing the right and left brains – balancing the artist
and the craftsman
- Songwriting as worship
- Filling the well – how to deal with dry spells
- The hourglass model – uniting the universal and the concrete
- The art and science of re-writing
- Various techniques (engaging the listener from the first line, the
power of imagery, saying more with less, etc.)
